Companion® Microbial Inoculant

For Prevention and Control of Soil and Foliar Diseases on Turf and Professional Landscapes

Companion liquid microbial inoculant helps prevent and suppress a number of soil and foliar diseases, including dollar spot, brown patch, pythium, root rot, fusarium, anthracnose, and summer patch.  Companion’s unique formulation contains a specific strain of the bacteria Bacillus subtilis, GB03, which forms spores on plant roots that coat and protect them by inhibiting the growth of fungal spores, a process known as Induced Systemic Resistance (ISR).  The Bacillus subtilis GB03 spores in Companion have the added benefits of also improving the nutrient absorption capacity of plant roots and offering enzyme and auxin metabolites that effectively improve root and plant growth and plant energy synthesis.

In addition to reducing fungal pressure, the organic solution in Companion offers a high concentration of natural carbohydrates, contributing to overall soil health and effectively removing chemical salts from the soil.  Companion is an ideal probiotic to create a healthy soil microbe population and overall soil environment.

Companion® Microbial Inoculant Q & A

Q. What is Bacillus subtilis?
A. Bacillus subtilis (pronounced "bah-SILL-us SUH-tuh-liss") is a naturally occurring, rod-shaped bacteria found in soils all over the world.

Q. How do Bacillus subtilis GB03 survive in the soil?
A. If conditions are unfavorable, the Bacillus subtilis do not die, but rather form spores (go into dormancy).  They re-emerge when favorable conditions are re-established.

Q. Where do Bacillus subtilis live once they are applied?
A. In the soil, Bacillus subtilis GB03 bacteria establish colonies around the root hairs of the plant.

Q. What do Bacillus subtilis eat?
A. The main food sources for Bacillus subtilis are 1) the sugars being released by the plant roots and 2) carbon from dead root cells.

Q. What effects do Bacillus subtilis GB03 have on nutrients in the soil?
A. Bacillus subtilis GB03 produce enzymes that help free up minor elements in the soil, making them available for plant uptake.

Q. Is it true that Bacillus subtilis improve the root system of the plant?
A. Yes.  By cleaning up old and dead roots, the Bacillus subtilis actually function as root "cleaners".  They also produce hormones that have been shown to increase root branching, mass, and length.

Q. Can Companion be used in high stress situations like heat and drought?
A. Absolutely!  In such situations, Companion's microbes begin working immediately to protect, feed, and stimulate new root development.

Q. How often should Companion be applied?
A. Under normal conditions, Companion should be applied every 2-4 weeks.  This keeps a high population of beneficial microbes in the soil, so pathogens are forced to go elsewhere.

Features of Companion:

  • Prevents and suppresses a broad range of important soil-borne and foliar diseases, including dollar spot, brown patch, fusarium, pythium (blight, root rot, and crown rot), summer patch, and anthracnose
  • Most effective when applied prior to the onset of disease, and used in combination and rotation with chemical fungicides to enhance disease control
  • Stimulates healthy growth of plant roots with enzymes and auxin metabolites, and improves root absorptive capacity for plant nutrients
  • Natural carbohydrate solution base removes chemical salts from soil and contributes to overall soil health and plant energy synthesis
  • Ideal probiotic effect promotes growth of the soil microbial population and a healthy overall soil environment

Apply Companion® throughout the growing season on all types of soils and turfgrass varieties.  Apply when ground temperature has reached 7oC (45oF) or above and until late fall prior to light frost.  Begin applications prior to when environmental conditions become conducive to disease development, and continue throughout periods of disease and stress.

Note:  To ensure optimal results in the field, it is important to store, handle, and apply Companion correctly.  Store in a cool, dry place, and out of direct sunlight.  Always replace cap, never store exposed to the air, and do not allow unusual product to come into contact with water or humidity.
